✨ Curatorial Statment by Clara ✨
This is a show about an ongoing process of mending and patching.
“things left unsaid” presents a new body of work made over the past year that contemplates and reflects on the artist’s mother-daughter relationships, exploring the meanings of home, belonging and cultural identity. She has repurposed various objects at ther home, from trivial collectibles to chipping walls. The artist hopes to challege the idea of home as s safe space, unfolding the power dynamics undefined by loss, pain and trauma in a conservative household. Tracing her maternal family history and delving into her personal archive, the artist discoverd her growing pains are the extension of her mother’s pain and loss.
Growing up in a household that considers actions speak louder than words, the mismatch of expectations and needs brings the mother-daughter relationship into the test. The artist confronted the distance documenting the daily interactions with her mother, showing all the flaws, hiccups and awkwardness. In the process of research, she visited places where her mother was detained and followed her mother to her workplace and tried to learn her trade. Here and there, the artist intentionally crossed paths with her mother, colliding with her mother’s past and present. Pondering how these experiences shaped her mother and what she could have felt when she was her age, the imagination has filled the void in their relatioships.
In an emotive process of discovery and rediscovery, these interactions have led to realisation. There is no need to fight the distance between yourself and your loved ones. In a gentle and cautions ways, the layers of defence and being peeled. Crawling into these cracks and crevices, the healing is slowly taking place at Rannie and her mother’s own place.
