Biography

b. 1997, Hong Kong

Rannie Ip Ka Man was born in Hong Kong and obtained her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Cinematic Design and Photographic Digital Art from Hong Kong Metropolitan University in 2021. Her practice focuses on the entanglement between personal memory and collective history, often beginning from family experience, labour conditions and everyday observations to consider how individuals are shaped, displaced and internalised under different forms of power and structure. She habitually collects conversation records, personal writings, historical archives and everyday objects, reorganising and reconfiguring these scattered traces into image-based installations and moving-image works, in an attempt to reawaken those marks that have been forgotten in the flow of daily life.

Her current research extends from earlier reflections that take the mother–daughter relationship as a starting point, centring on intergenerational trauma, migration experience and the working class, and examining how these structures are concealed yet persist within individual lives. At the same time, she investigates the states of alienation experienced by contemporary workers inside the “capitalistic matrix”. Working primarily with image-based installation and moving image, she explores how image-making can respond to and intervene in experiences of alienation, and how it might open up methodological possibilities for imagining forms of “counter‑alienation”.
